Book of Obscure Remedies, Chapter 5: The 7 best pets in WoW

Book of Obscure Remedies, Chapter 5: The 7 best pets in WoW as chosen by Lamia (and rated by Mini-Thor)

Vanity pets. An important and very visible, if ever so useless part of World of Warcraft. No one reading this list will confuse these pets with those of the hunter or warlock, which obviously has an actual and some times dramatic effect on game play. This is not the fact about the vanity pets. Apart from a very selected few pets, none of them have any effect on game play at all. They simply add to your character’s over all appearance. Most players will agree that the looks of his or her character is important. This - combined with the fact that it opens for an interesting way of collecting - has made these tiny companions a very popular among people playing WoW.
Some of the pets are really easy to get hold of, for instance those vaguely connected to each playable race. Some are bought from vendors, others you can get through different quests. And then there are those rare ones, either from drops or those you can get through the card games or collectors editions. In total there are more than 200 pets.

In this chapter of of Obscure Remedies we take a look at the 7 best of these pets. We have asked our very own shadowpriestess Lamia to construct the list. She is without a doubt more qualified than me, or most other people, as she’s the owner of more than hundred vanity pets. She has also given her honest opinion why that specific pet should make the list.

Now, we have also asked someone else to comment the pets. Namely the weapon of war, the metal mayhem, none other than Mini-Thor. He has also asked to rate the pets in Lamia’s list using his own values. We can’t say no to a loud and angry, flying mech with eight cannons.

Here we go, the 7 best pets in World of Warcraft!

7. Sprite Darter Hatchling
http://i.imgur.com/V714k.jpg

This little guy is obtained trough an Alliance quest chain. An interesting fact is that this quest is surprisingly hard to find, as it’s located smack in the middle of no where, without any obvious pointers to the quest giver. A night elf sends you around the world, and you end up with a tiny, but extremely detailed sprite darter. At some point, they also made it possible for Horde to get it, by killing sprite darters for a low drop chance.

Lamia says: It's simply beautiful

Mini-Thor says: SO TINY AND FRAGILE! NO CANNONS!

6. Digusting Oozeling
http://i.imgur.com/ICeNv.jpg

This guy is a pain to get, unless you luck out and get it cheap on the auction house. Every ooze in Western Plaguelands and Felwood had a chance to drop a slime covered bag, and every bag had a tiny chance of containing an oozeling. What really separates this pet from most others, is that it gives you a debuff. It lowers your stats by 3 or something, in addition to turning your character green.

Lamia says: It's cool to be green (for a change ^^), especially on a huuuuge mount being green too (mammoth?)

Mini-Thor says: IT’S DISGUSTING AND GREEN, AND IT REMINDS ME OF A CREEP TUMOR. BUT IS COOL BECAUSE IT’S UGLY AND POWERFUL LIKE ME!

5. Legs
http://i.imgur.com/T6nBF.jpg

One of the many pets it’s possible to obtain through the Children’s Week quests. This is obviously a miniature version of the marsh stalkers from Zangarmarsh, and is a lot smaller than you’d expect. It also has a really interesting feature as it glows in the dark. Other cool pets from the Children’s Week quest chains included a turtle, an elephant and the weirdly cute beholder.

Lamia says: It glows in the dark <3

Mini-Thor says: IS TINY LIKE A MUSHROOM. AND HAS NO CANNONS! THOR WILL STEP ON IT AND CRUSH IT!

4. Mr. Grubbs
http://i.imgur.com/myAff.jpg

One of the many pets you get by doing quests (or apparently, it's a drop from mobs), and one of the many pets that is simply a miniature version of world mobs. The plaguelands is filled with giant maggots, but Mr. Grubbs has a talent that none of his bigger relatives has. He can jump high up in the air and do a salto.

Lamia says: Worm doing backflips? Awesome!

Mini-Thor says: IT CAN JUMP, JUST LIKE A REAPER, AND IS UGLY LIKE THOR. BUT IT HAS NO CANNONS!

3. Moonkin Hatchling
http://i.imgur.com/Of850.jpg

This pet could be bought through Blizzard’s web store, which in itself should be a bit weird. You already pay for playing the game, and the moonkin hatchling adds nothing to your game play. But what some people forget is that all have different reasons for playing WoW. Some like the challenge of the arena, some like farming the instances for better gear, or you collect ingame items. This pet, to make worth of it’s price, has several abilities that other pets lack. It can dance, it can sit and it will try to fly. The Horde has a slightly different moonkin hatchling.

Lamia says: Have you ever seen a moonkin that tries to fly? (cuuutie) And you can dance with it!!

Mini-Thor says: THIS THING IS TOO CUTE! AND HAS TOO FEW CANNONS! THOR DISLIKES ANYTHING CUTE!

2. Dark Phoenix Hatchling
http://i.imgur.com/WIGLw.jpg

As natural as the Phoenix pet from Zombie Kelthalas, we get the equivalent pet to the Dark Phoenix guild mount. Us comic book nerds get a slightly different association, but this is non the less among the better looking pets – as well as mounts in the game. High level guilds has access to both.

http://i.imgur.com/ZlBNl.jpg

Lamia says: It matches my everyday colour perfectly

Mini-Thor says: THIS PET REMINDS ME OF PROTOSS PHOENIX, WHICH I SHOOT WITH MY STRIKE CANNONS!

1. Darting Hatchling
http://i.imgur.com/hfgSB.jpg

A wide selection of raptor hatchlings are available as pets, but this is the only one that can run at fast speed. Those who want the Darting Hatchling would have to camp Dustwallow Marsh for the rare mob that drops it or the nest where it can be picked up.

http://i.imgur.com/g4VCM.jpg

Lamia says: cause it darts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mini-Thor says: YOU HAVE TO KILL IT’S MOTHER TO GET IT! THAT’S PRETTY BAD ASS! IT CLEARLY HAS STIM, SINCE IT CAN RUN FAST!

List came to life before i got myslef a Celestial Dragon that would get it's spot there for irresistible sparkling beauty ^^

I'm glad you like it guys ^^

PS: Mr. Grubbs is a possible drop when you're killing mobs in Eastern Palugelands, similar to Oozeling, just with way less annoying drop rate smile
(i got it twice already)

Not that it really matters, but the darting hatchling can be picked up from Dart's nest, no need to camp the rare. Respawns about every 2-4 hours, so very easy to get smile

Very nice post!
I like pets aswell, but I must admit that I don't quite agree with the list smile

Kirin Tor Familiar for one is really awesome, even though they "nerfed" it. (it explode!)
Grunty is just pure awesomeness!
and finally Clockwork Rocket Bot is really fun when others have it up. THEY BATTLE EACHOTHER!! smile

Re: Book of Obscure Remedies, Chapter 5: The 7 best pets in WoW

yeah those that battle each others are great.

some of my personal favorites are the old dragonlings, even though I only have the black, the oozeling and sprite darter.

Now for the best pet in game, ask cryonic to pop his mini-diablo or mini tyrael. those are some amazing looking and funny pets.
