For people with not so very legal XP:

SET timingMethod "1" or SET timingMethod "2"
to the config.wtf file to achieve the same effect without running WMP."
Also, this only works for XP, not for vista.
Just tried, I added ' SET timingMethod "1" ' to the config.WTF, and noticed a pretty nice speed increase (I think its ~5-10 seconds faster, from launching wow, to actually be ingame).
' SET timingMethod "2" ' seemed to be even faster, I haven`t actually measured it, but it`s definitely a speed increase from the normal startup.
