The obvious counter messure is to turn down all graphics setting but it is possible to tweak wow even more.
Make a macro ingame and copy this into it:

/console groundEffectDensity 16
/console groundEffectDist 1
/console horizonfarclip 1305
/console farclip 177
/console characterAmbient 1
/console smallcull 1
/console skycloudlod 1
/console detailDoodadAlpha 1

Hit the macro and you >should< see a great deal FPS increase ~5-15fps
