Casting and mana regen (spirit/mp5)

I and Euthia did some quick testing/pondering today about exactly how casting interferes with the spirit-based mana regen, and we figured it'd be nice for everyone, especially healers, to know how it really works, so I'm tossing our results up here smile.

As you probably already know, spirit regen (mana regenerated while not casting) is the default regeneration mode, but when you cast a spell you only benefit from mana per five seconds regeneration, and not until you wait 5 seconds while not casting you get spirit regeneration back... But how does it work if you don't finish your cast, we wondered? It seems like the 5 second rule doesn't apply until the spell is actually cast, which means that if you start channeling a spell but don't finish it, you'll still benefit from spirit regen. The same seems to hold true for spells that cost no mana, such as an Omen of Clarity proc, or other types of clearcasting. So basically, the you have to lose mana to lose your spirit regen.

Which is pretty neat, since it allows you to pre-cast heals and cancel them if not needed, and still be able to have high mana regen smile. And also if there's any other caster druid with omen of clarity out there, you can toss spells when it's procced without screwing with your regeneration.

To summarize:

- Spirit-based regeneration works until mana is lost from a cast, and won't kick in again until 5 seconds without casting a mana-costing spell.

- Channeling spells doesn't interrupt spirit regen.

- Spells costing no mana do not interrupt spirit regen.

So, enjoy your preemptive casting, healers smile.
